Ghana Badminton Hosts Media Workshop to Strengthen Sports Coverage

The Ghana Badminton Association (GBA) has taken a strategic step to elevate the visibility of the sport by organizing a technical media workshop for sports journalists and digital content creators at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium.
Held on Thursday, January 30, 2026, the session brought together 22 sports media practitioners drawn from traditional and digital platforms across the country. The workshop was delivered in collaboration with the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and focused on equipping media professionals with the technical and storytelling tools needed to cover badminton more effectively.
GBA President Evans Yeboah used the opportunity to call on corporate Ghana to increase investment in badminton development, stressing that the sport’s steady rise requires both strong media backing and private sector support.

He urged journalists to go beyond match results and rankings by telling the deeper human stories behind athletes’ journeys, sacrifices, and achievements.
Media Education as a Catalyst for Ghana Badminton Growth
The workshop focused on building participants’ understanding of badminton rules, court dimensions, equipment specifications, terminologies, and competition regulations, while also sharpening storytelling techniques specific to Olympic sports.
According to the Association, the session was designed to deepen technical knowledge, inspire compelling sports narratives, amplify badminton’s appeal to younger audiences, and build sustainable partnerships with the media to grow the sport nationally.
Participants included bloggers, editors, photographers, storytellers, and digital creators from Ghana’s sports media ecosystem. Although 42 practitioners registered, 22 attended and described the workshop as both educational and engaging, with many agreeing that more consistent interaction between federations and journalists is needed beyond one-off events.
During the session, Evans Yeboah highlighted the journey of Francis Oteng, Ghana’s leading badminton player and the current number one-ranked athlete in Africa, as a powerful example of the kind of inspirational stories that deserve greater media attention.

He explained that increased and informed media coverage can help more Ghanaians understand badminton’s culture, attract young talent, encourage sponsorship, and support the technical appreciation of elite competition.
Ghana Badminton has recorded notable growth since Yeboah’s election as President in November 2025 for the 2026–2030 term. The federation has expanded grassroots development, increased international participation, and secured seven nominations at the 50th SWAG Awards in 2025, a historic milestone for the sport.
The Association also hosted the All Africa Under-15 Team Championships in August 2025 at the Borteyman Sports Complex, where Ghana made history by defeating Egypt to win the continental team title.
At the African Youth Games in Luanda in December 2025, Ghana’s junior team secured a bronze medal in the mixed team event. Athletes Andy Amofa, Obapomba Adu-Mintah, Rachel Quarcoo, and Moslena Asu gained continental recognition during the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games qualifiers.
Founded in 1962, the Ghana Badminton Association is the national governing body responsible for administering, promoting, and developing the Olympic sport nationwide. It is a founding member of the Badminton Confederation of Africa and an affiliate of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The federation currently oversees about 82 community clubs, serving an estimated 4.8 million participants across recreational and competitive levels.
The media workshop forms part of a broader strategy to raise badminton’s national profile through improved storytelling, public engagement, and professional coverage as Ghana prepares athletes for future continental and global competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
