Burkina Faso has strengthened its national humanitarian response system with the delivery of 64 heavy-duty trucks to the National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (CONASUR), marking a historic expansion of the agency’s logistical capacity.

Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo officially handed over the first batch of vehicles on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, to the Ministry of Family and Solidarity. The fleet, valued at nearly 5.5 billion CFA francs (approximately $9 million), was fully financed through the state budget.

A Historic Upgrade for CONASUR

Since its creation in 1972, CONASUR had never received such a significant logistical reinforcement. Until now, the agency operated with fewer than 10 trucks, limiting its ability to respond quickly and independently to emergencies.

“This is a historic moment,” the Prime Minister said during the handover ceremony. “For the first time, CONASUR is receiving more than 64 trucks in a single delivery, and this is only the beginning.”

The newly acquired fleet includes:

  • 10 dump trucks
  • 10 10-ton trucks
  • 38 40-ton trucks
  • 2 flatbed equipment transport trucks
  • 2 tanker trucks
  • 2 cranes

Officials indicated that additional equipment purchases are planned to further strengthen the agency’s operational capabilities.

Reducing Dependence on Private Contractors

According to the Prime Minister, one of the government’s key objectives is to make CONASUR more autonomous. In recent years, the agency has frequently relied on private transport providers to deliver humanitarian aid and supply convoys due to insufficient logistical resources.

That dependency, officials say, has sometimes slowed response times and affected operational efficiency.

“Most of the relief convoys you see are organized by CONASUR,” Ouédraogo said. “However, without adequate transport capacity, the agency has often had to rely on external service providers, which can delay interventions.”

With the new trucks, authorities expect faster delivery of food, medical supplies, and essential goods to vulnerable communities, particularly in remote and crisis-affected regions.

Strengthening Disaster Preparedness

Beyond emergency food distribution, CONASUR is also mandated to respond to natural disasters and humanitarian crises. The government says the new vehicles will enhance preparedness for floods, displacement emergencies, and other unforeseen events.

Family and Solidarity Minister Lieutenant-Colonel Possowendé Pélagie Kaboré also outlined the technical composition of the fleet during the ceremony, emphasizing its role in improving field operations nationwide.

The investment reflects broader efforts by the Burkinabè authorities to reinforce national humanitarian infrastructure and ensure more rapid support for populations in need.
