“Mahama Can’t Appoint Everyone” – Asiedu Nketia Urges NDC Supporters to Remain Patient

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called on party supporters who are yet to receive government appointments to remain calm and exercise patience.

Speaking during a nationwide “Thank You Tour” stop in Winneba in the Effutu Constituency on Thursday, 12 February 2026, Asiedu Nketia acknowledged growing frustrations among some party members following the NDC’s return to power under President John Dramani Mahama.

However, he emphasised that constitutional limits and the administration’s commitment to running a lean government make it impossible to appoint every party member into public office.

Lean Government, Limited Appointments

Addressing party faithful, the NDC chairman explained that the number of political appointments permitted under Ghana’s Constitution places clear constraints on the President’s authority.

“I am aware that some of you are unhappy because you did not receive an appointment upon our return to power. This is understandable,” he said. “It is the reason why I am embarking on this ‘Thank You Tour’ to explain these issues for your understanding.”

He noted that President Mahama’s administration remains committed to efficiency and fiscal discipline, which includes limiting the size of government. According to him, the objective is to avoid excessive appointments that could burden the public purse.

“The challenge is that, given the number of appointments the constitution permits President Mahama to make, not all members of the NDC can be accommodated,” Asiedu Nketia stated. “So please be patient. There is no need to be angry with the party.”

Asiedu Nketia Call for Internal Dialogue

The NDC chairman also cautioned party supporters against expressing dissatisfaction through public criticism or internal division. He urged members to use established party structures and communication channels to address grievances.

Political analysts say such appeals are common following electoral victories, particularly in competitive political environments where expectations for appointments and recognition are high.

Asiedu Nketia stressed that party unity remains critical for the success of the Mahama administration. He encouraged supporters to focus on consolidating the party’s gains and supporting the government’s broader development agenda.

Managing Expectations After Electoral Victory

The NDC’s return to power generated optimism among grassroots supporters, many of whom played active roles during the campaign period. However, as with previous administrations, the demand for public office positions often exceeds available slots.

Observers note that managing post-election expectations is an important test of party leadership, particularly in a political climate where transparency and accountability are under increased public scrutiny.

Asiedu Nketia’s message in Winneba forms part of a broader effort by party executives to maintain cohesion while reinforcing the administration’s commitment to responsible governance.

As the Thank You Tour continues across the country, party leaders are expected to reiterate calls for patience, unity, and constructive engagement among supporters.
